Void is a game about not using your phone. It needs a few sensors to know that you have
stopped, and a location to know where your stillness happened. This page says exactly what
that means.
What stays on your device, always
- Camera images. The front camera (or the Face ID infrared sensor) is used
only to detect whether your eyes are closed and whether a face is present. Frames are processed
on the device and discarded immediately. No image, video, or face model is ever stored,
uploaded, or transmitted.
- Microphone audio. The microphone measures how loud the room is, as a single
number. No audio is recorded, stored, or transmitted.
- Motion data. Accelerometer and gyroscope readings are used to tell whether
the phone is in a hand. They are not stored or transmitted.
- Your exact position. Precise coordinates never leave the device. Before
anything is uploaded, positions are rounded to a shared grid of roughly 150 metres.
What is stored on our servers
- Your email address, to sign you in.
- Your points and quiet time, so progress follows you between devices.
- Void territory, as grid cells (~150 m) with the total time you spent in each.
- A username, only if you choose one, and friendships, only if
you make them.
Who can see your voids
Every void is anonymous by default. You decide, void by void:
- Anonymous — nobody sees its shape or location. It contributes only to a
coarse, ownerless "hardness" field covering roughly a square kilometre, which no one can trace
back to you or to a particular address.
- Friends — visible only to people whose friend request you accepted, or who
accepted yours.
- Public — visible to everyone on the shared map and at
void-map.pages.dev, labelled with your username.
Nothing about your live position is ever shared. Public voids show where you have spent quiet
time, at grid resolution — not where you are now.
What we never do
- No advertising, no ad identifiers, no tracking across apps or websites.
- No selling or sharing of personal data with data brokers.
- No analytics or behavioural profiling.
- No use of face data for identification, and none of it leaves the device.
Services we rely on
Accounts and game data are stored with Supabase (Postgres hosting). Map tiles
come from MapTiler and OpenStreetMap. The website is hosted by
Cloudflare. These providers process data on our behalf to run the service.
Deleting your data
Email contact@suncostlabs.com from your account's
address and we will delete your account, your territory, and everything attached to it. During
the beta this is done by hand, usually within a few days.
Children
Void is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes materially, the date above changes and we will note it in the app.
